When the story of the rich young man stands alone, as it did this pass through the cycle, it's more difficult to see it as a set-up for the promise to Peter (and by extension to the rest of us) of recompense for current sacrifices. Missing in Matthew, however, is that most remarkable aside, and persecution besides – letting slip the whole point as if in passing.
