Only a radio journalist like Marvin Kalb could claim (as he recently did on NPR) that, if the FCC allows media ownership to be deregulated, the Republic is at risk because ... of less radio journalism. Media companies will conglomerate, of course, and these evil bottom-liners will gradually replace honest journalism with (shudder) talk radio. Because it costs less. (And gets higher ratings.) All over America, the uninformed will be spouting their opinions all over the airwaves, with no trained professionals around to tell them what to think about and how. Horrors.
