When Joseph's brother's sold him into slavery, they not only saved themselves from the famine to come – they also sold their own families and descendants into slavery for four hundred years. (And helped turn Egypt from a place of independent land-owning farmers into Pharaoh's private property.) All the “God writes straight with crooked lines” folk tend to elide the costs.
